Today marks the end of the 21 Days of Prayer for Sons. Over the past 21 days, I along with several hundred other moms, have prayed 210 scriptures over each of our boys. The prayers covered many topics from behaviors to characteristics. The challenge began with 10 prayers focusing on the most crucial part...their hearts. Without a focus on each of their hearts then we will completely miss the point of our jobs as moms. While only God can truly change their heart, we must pour truth into their lives and see that the root of every issue lies in the heart.
When I see that every behavior and attitude is a result of the condition of my son's heart, then that changes my parenting mindset. I seek to find out why they're acting a certain way or breaking a certain rule instead of just punishing the outward behavior. Many of their actions can be traced back to disobedience and lack of submission to authority. This is the time when I can point them to what the Bible says about that behavior and what He expects. Taking the time to train my sons to to respect and submit to authority now will give them greater success as adults. In order for them to grow up to be spiritual leaders of their homes, they must first be willing to be led by God.
My ultimate goal as a mom is not to just survive the stages of childhood and make happy memories along the way until they go off to college or move out on their own. My number one desire is to train up young men of God who will leave my home with a firm foundation of who they are in Christ. Young men who serve God joyfully wherever He leads them. Young men who are spiritual leaders of their homes. Young men who not only know how to cook, wash dishes & laundry, but do it as an act of love and service to their future families. Young men who stand on God's authority and are not swayed by the world's influences.
This 21 day challenge has changed my simple prayers for my sons into purposeful blessings upon my sons using God's Word. And even though the official challenge is over, I plan to continue fighting for the hearts of my boys the best way I know how....on my knees.
I encourage all moms of boys to get the book Warrior Prayers for Boys and begin praying specifically and boldly for your sons. It will change your goals as a mom and give you a desire for kindgom purpose in your daily training of your sons.
